The Philips Senseo HD7860 - A Review

The Philips Senseo HD7860 is the up-to-the-minute manifestation of easy to use, more or less instant real coffee makers, using coffee pads.

We have reviewed the model. First impressions are... well... remarkable. It is described as a machine for people who favor straight lines to curves. It does have one or two curves, as it happens, but is a very fine looking, yet compact machine (standing around 17 cm wide, 22 cm deep and 25 cm high). It comes in black or white.

It's a bit disturbing when you warm up the machine for use for the first time as its very noisy whilst being flushed. However its much quieter when being used after that.

The most critical considerations in reviewing the HD7860 are the ease of use and quality of the coffee it produces.

The model comes with two outputs and so can produce two cups at one time as well as just one. And has a height variable stand for the cups, so different cup / mug sizes can simply be used. Mugs or cups up to 115 mm high can easily be accommodated. In less than a minute, it will have 2 cups prepared. In just thirty seconds it will churn out 1 cup.

The HD7860/60 has a remarkably large capacity, holding up to 1.2 litres. This can easily make 8 cups. Each cup is 120ml.

The coffee maker shuts itself off after thirty minutes - an invaluable feature I found!

The coffee pads are much better value than the coffee pods that have been traditionally used in such machines. Although the Senseo ones are about 15p each, you can acquire other ones much cheaper, and being pads there should not commonly be a compatibility issue. You'll want to obtain round ones.We have used original and substitute coffee pads and the coffee produced by each has been brilliant.

The eye-catching appearance of the model is the most noteworthy feature of this coffee maker - combined, perhaps with the great quality of the coffee it makes!. We think that the HD7860 comes into its own when positioned in a somewhat contemporary kitchen or one with dark work tops - it will commonly fit in better than the more customary machines. And it produces excellent coffee!
